Boon Khao Ornith or Boon (Little Rice Wrap) Isan Tradition After Lent for about a month, another Heat Cong tradition Isan. Our house is held to dedicate charity to those who have passed away and the animals of Hell or Perth. The villagers will take rice, fish, savory dishes, fruits, chess pieces, cigarettes and wrap them in banana leaves and make small wraps before placing them along the root of a large tree or on the ground around the pagoda or church. This year, 2024 is the same as September 2, 2024.
By making this earthly rice pilgrimage, villagers believe that it is a pilgrimage to dedicate to the deceased, as well as to dedicate to the beasts of Hell or Perth. In addition, the tradition of earthly rice pilgrimage is considered an important day for villagers to make alms for the needy, including helping small and large animals.
Rationale for the backgroundof this story of making rice pilgrimage is due to the belief according to the fairy tale that "The relatives of Lord Phimphisan have embezzled money from various monks' temples into their own in the time of Gassapa Buddha. The former relatives of Lord Phimphisan, after death, have been born into hell throughout Buddha. When Lord Phimphisan gave alms to Somnakod Buddha in Phat Kappa, he did not gravel the water to dedicate charity to those relatives. When the night fell, the relatives of Lord Phimphisanhas come to send a shrill cry and show a formidable figure to Lord Phimphisarn. He heard and saw. The next morning, he went to ask the Buddha. The Buddha told the story that was the cause for Lord Phimphisarn to know. Lord Phimphisarn has made merit again and dedicated charity to the dead relatives. He has come to show himself to the Lord Phimphisan and know that the suffering that the relatives have received has subsided because of his charity. "The people of Isaan have taken this cause to make merit in the ground consecutively."
Boon Khao Rueang Din R
On Ram 13, the evening of the 9th month, or before the day of Boon Khao Din, four parts of savory food, chess pieces and cigarettes are prepared together. The first part is prepared for the family. The second part is for relatives. The third part is dedicated to relatives who have passed away. And the fourth part is dedicated to monks in savory food. The third part is a "Little Rice Wrap", that is, take a banana leaf and wrap the food using the size of the palm. The food that is wrapped in banana leaves is as follows:
1. Steamed sticky rice is cooked and formed into small cubes the size of a thumb.
2. Add a little fish, chicken, pork.
3. Little banana, guava, papaya, potato, sugarcane, ripe papaya or other sweets
4. One word of chewing, one cigarette, one cigarette.
On the 14th evening of the 9th month, villagers will go to the temple from 4 a.m. to take the prepared items to put in a krathong or sew in a package like rice to be placed in various charitable places. This type of placement is called less rice wrapping, but if it is placed in the temple, it is called granny (periodically). Less rice wrapping, which when placed, will be done quietly. There is no gong beating, no drum beating.
After laying, the villagers will go home to prepare food to make merit at the temple again in the morning. When the monks are done in the morning, they will preach to celebrate the merit of rice. The villagers will then bring the Thai factor to the monks. When the monks are done giving blessings, the villagers who come to make merit will gravel and dedicate water to the charity to all the relatives who have passed away.
Is there a difference between "Boon Khao Rueang Din" and "Boon Khao Sak"?
Both of these traditions are merit making to dedicate charity to the deceased as well, but there are differences in the "days and months" set aside to make merit. The tradition of making merit in Khao Chardin (making merit in the ninth month) on the day of Ram 14 at the evening of the 9th month is considered an all-inclusive merit making. There is no limit on who to dedicate to. The tradition of making merit in Khao Sak (making merit in the tenth month) on the day of 15 at the evening of the 10th month. It will be held to make merit for the ancestors and the late relatives. The name will be clearly stated.
